The bulk of the collection is the manuscript of Bates' work "The native tribes of Western Australia", written during her period of service with the Western Australian Government from 1904 to 1912. It comprises 99 "folios" split between Sections I to XIII. Each page has been item-numbered within the "folios". Many of the drafts have been annotated by A.R. Radcliffe-Brown, a British social anthropologist.
